Personal profile

Personal profile

Thierry Gacoin is a materials chemist, research director at the CNRS, and professor of materials science in the physics and chemistry departments at École Polytechnique. He is also chair of the chemistry department and co-scientific director of the interdisciplinary center “Materials for Society” (M4S) at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris. His research activities, conducted at the École Polytechnique's Condensed Matter Physics Laboratory, focus on the synthesis and study of the optical properties of colloidal nanocrystals and nanostructured thin films. The systems studied have promising applications in the field of biomedical diagnostic tools, quantum technologies, and functional layers for energy issues, particularly as applied to housing.

Research interests

  • Materials Chemistry and Physics,
  • Liquid routes for the elaboration of colloidal nanoparticles and thin films (sol-gel, precipitation, colloid chemistry)
  • Optical properties
  • Micro/nanostructure effects on optical properties : size-shape-surface effects, dielectric microstructure
