Abstract

We have designed low divergence 1.55 µm monomode tapered lasers for 2.5 Gbit/s operation. Penalty under 90 km transmission is below 2 dB with mean power exceeding 14 mW. Thanks to a proper grating design, all lasers show floor free BER results with a 11 dB ER. Using a simple efficiency criteria (<0.31W/A), we demonstrate a 100% yield for 2.5 Gbit/s floor free transmission with an extinction ratio as high as 14 dB.
