Abstract

This paper describes an experimental 40 GHz repetition rate short pulse generation based on a simple and affordable scheme. Simulation results complement the analysis. An optical pulse train with FWHM lower than 4 ps has been obtained using a 20GHz-driven lithium niobate modulator and a dispersion shifted fibre. This scheme has the great advantage of providing a signal clock that can be used for oscilloscope observation and for bit error rate measurement.
