Abstract

This paper proposes a coupled chemo-poromechanical model for the excavated damaged zone located at the interface between the injection well cement and the caprock in the context of CO2 geological storage. The model relies on a simplified chemistry of carbonates precipitation induced from the well cement carbonation. Crystallization pressure induced by calcium carbonates produces tensile stress concentration at cement-caprock interface in the cement sheath which may lead to permanent damage. This poromechanical model relates a macroscale formulation with an insight into material microstructure through pore size distribution changes induced by crystallization.
