A new level set based regularization for local damage models: Theoretical description and 1D numerical experiments

Abstract

Local damage models are known to suffer from spurious localizations because no length scale is involved in the model. We propose here a new way to regularize local damage models. Damage evolves through the propagation of front located by a level set. The damage value at a point is explicity given in the term of the level set value at that point. The model is presented in a general setting and it is demonstrated on 1D numerical experiments that it avoids spurious localization.
