Abstract
A classical virial theorem is extended to quantum field theories and is explicitly proved in the case of quantum electrodynamics using the scale transformation properties of the fields. The resulting formula gives a relation between the trace anomaly of the energy-momentum tensor and the energy of a quantum bound state.
