ac stark shifts in Rydberg NO levels induced by intense laser pulses

Abstract

In this study, measurements of the NO A 2Σ+ n′ = 2 → X 2Πr n″ = O fluorescence yield were carried out as a function of incident laser intensity. It was found that light at wavelengths to the blue of the A 2Σ+ n′ = 2 ← X 2Πr n″ = O two-photon absorption resonance in the low-field limit result in population of the n′ = 2 vibrational level at intensities >2×10 W cm2. A kinetic model predicted that the variation of the A 2Σ → X 2Πr fluorescence allows a quantitative estimate of the extent of the ac Stark shift of the 3 so A 2Σ+ electron as at least 0.4 of the full ponderomotive shift expected for a free electron.
