Abstract

The rate of air entrainment into a viscous fluid by impacting both liquid jets and solids was investigated. The air entrainment produces bubbles in a liquid. In many industrial processes, controlling the rate of bubble formation is important. Air entrainment rates over 4 orders of magnitude in the dimensionless jet speed was predicted through simple scaling arguments. It was observed that the entrainment rate depended strongly on the jet velocity.
