Chalcogenide Thin-Film Solar Cells

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter contains sections titled: This chapter focuses on CIGS technology and talks about the new kesterite compounds. CIGS-based cells consist of a stack of thin-film layers deposited on a rigid or flexible substrate. The preparation of CIGS-based solar cells starts with the deposition of Mo on a glass or flexible substrate. The properties of the Mo film and the choice of the substrate are of prime importance for the final device quality. A wide variety of thin-film deposition methods has been used to deposit CIGS thin films. The chapter discusses the intrinsic stability of CIGS and the global chemical stability of the device. An important characteristic of CIGS is its mixed ionic-electronic conductivity. The chapter also discusses two pathways that are followed to improve CIGS solar cells in terms of efficiency and material usage. The chapter explains the synthesis processes of CZTS, and briefly addresses the crystallographic and optoelectronic properties.
