Compactification of M-theory and consequences on supersymmetry breaking

Abstract

We perform various truncations of the type 11-of → 5-d → 4-d of the strongly coupled E8 × E8 heterotic string Lagrangian of the Hořava and Witten and show geometrical properties coming from the 5-d theory. We study in detail the supersymmetry breaking through the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism along the eleventh dimension. It is shown that the decompactification problem is much improved compared to the supersymmetry breaking by compactification in the weakly coupled strings. Phenomenological issued are discussed.
