Abstract

Compaction bands are studied in a high-porosity limestone from the Parisian basin under axisymmetric triaxial loading. Compression loading is performed in several stages on a cylindrical sample under a relatively high confining pressure. Several sets of X-Ray computed tomography are recorded before and after each loading step. Digital volume correlation is applied to build 3D incremental strain maps and identify the formation and evolution of deformation bands. A new post-processing of the strain maps is developed in order to identify the type of the formed localization bands. The effect of porosity on localization is studied by building 3D porosity maps and superimposing them with deformation maps, both evaluated at similar scales. Compaction bands are observed in high-porosity zones and exhibit significant pore collapse whereas denser zones remain intact despite the presence of large pores. This experimental study permits to identify the microstructural features that play an important role in compaction banding.
