Abstract

This study focuses on understanding the driver activity when placed in an autonomous vehicle, level 3 (NHTSA), previously little investigated, which allows the driver to release, for a given time, the conduct in order to invest in other life on board tasks. We are particularly interested in the moment - crucial- of the takeover of the vehicle by the driver. We compare the takeover and hand over activities and onboard activities that take place in a driving simulator, observing mainly takeover and hand over time's activities and the lived experience of this. We show that the type of takeover (with the driver's initiative vs initiated by the system) does not induce the same behaviors. It is also observed that the realization of activity on board has an impact on the time of takeover.
