Deconfinement Transition and Center Symmetry

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter introduces the basic concepts that allow one to describe the confinement/deconfinement transition in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories including the Polyakov loop, the twisted gauge transformations, and the center symmetry group that emerges after removing the redundancy associated with the (genuine) periodic gauge transformations. These ideas are first presented within a non-gauge-fixed setting. Then, a critical analysis is presented of how these considerations are impacted by the combined use of gauge fixing and approximations/modeling, this as an incentive to look for appropriate gauge fixings in subsequent chapters.
