Abstract
In this paper, we study how French Chief Information Officers (CIOs) translate a new "digital transformation" logic within their respective organizations, through a role identity work carried out in the context of social interactions infused with political concern. We seek to investigate further the process whereby micro-level identity work impacts the translation of institutional logics to the organizational level. We focus on occupational role identity work and the social interactions that drive the enactment of some practices over others, as a response to institutional pressures. Our empirical analysis is based on a series of semi-structured interviews of CIOs working in diverse industries. We aim to identify patterns of role identities negotiations involving meaning and practices decoupling associated with the digital transformation logic.
