Dynamics of the orientation of active and passive scalars in two-dimensional turbulence

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The cascades of a passive scalar and vorticity in numerical simulations of freely decaying 2D turbulence were examined. The cascade dynamics is studied through the production of tracer gradients and the tendency for alignment of those gradients with equilibrium directions obtained in the adiabatic approximation. The kinematic properties of the initial conditions show that the conjugation relationship between vorticity and strain, slows down the cascade dynamics, whenever closed streamlines are present.
