Abstract

Experimental observations of enhanced acceleration of background electrons in a laser wakefield accelerator by using nonlinearly chirped laser pulses from a 10 Hz, Ti:Al2O3, CPA based laser system were taken into account. The nonlinear chirp caused pulse shape asymmetries with fast rises. Pulse shaping was found to be more effective than the use of linear chirp in controlling plasma instabilities and in optimizing the performance of laser-plasma devices.
