Abstract

In the present work, liquid-solid phase equilibria of the V-Cr-Si phase diagram were experimentally studied. The samples were prepared by arc melting and as-cast microstructures were characterized by SEM, WDS and XRD. No new ternary phase was observed. Seven primary solidification regions were identified in these alloys: (V,Cr) solid solution, M3Si, M5Si 3, MSi, M6Si5, MSi2 and (Si). Microstructural observations suggest two class II invariant transformations associated to the phases Liquid, M5Si3, MSi2 and MSi, and Liquid, M5Si3, MSi2 and M 6Si5, respectively. The existence of a maximum on the monovariant line between Liquid, M5Si3 and MSi2 was evidenced.
