Abstract

(Chemical Equation Presented) An easy transition: Facile generation of methanol is achieved by hydroxide-promoted transfer of a nucleophilic methyl group from methyltrioxorhenium to osmium tetroxide in basic aqueous medium via a cyclic transition state. 1H NMR spectroscopy and density functional calculations are used to investigate reaction pathways.
