Fast optical tunable filter for wavelength division multiplexing, using a SmA* phase liquid crystal Solc/Fabry-Perot structure

Research output: Contribution to journalConference articlepeer-review

Abstract

An optical tunable filter is proposed for the implementations of the wavelength division multiplexing communication systems. It is based on the cascade of a liquid crystal Solc filter and a liquid crystal Fabry-Perot interferometer filter. The Solc filter can be in folded or in fan arrangement. The Fabry-Perot filter can operate both in passive mode and in active mode. With the physical features discussed, the proposed optical filter can be a potential alternative for both packet- and circuit-switched applications.
