Abstract

This paper deals with an on-going study on the fatigue properties of a quaternary Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy produced by casting and by powder metallurgy. Room-temperature low-cycle fatigue tests reveal a cyclic strain hardening of the cast material which is strongly dependent on the applied strain amplitude. In particular, the pronounced hardening observed at high strain amplitude is associated with extensive twinning, although the stabilization of the stress amplitude at lower strain amplitude can lead to the formation of a classical vein-like structure. The cyclic behavior of the PM alloy is similar. The fatigue crack growth behavior is dependent on microstructure with the cast alloy exhibiting a superior resistance, even when crack closure effects are taken into account.
