Abstract
Optical spectra of solid-state polymer systems always present broad bands and interpretation of experimental data must take into account the importance of disorder and/or interchain interactions. These drawbacks are minimized in the new system studied here, consisting of polydiacetylene chains diluted in their single crystal monomer matrix. The long polymer chains are perfectly aligned and their concentration in the matrix is as low as 10-4. The effect of disorder or inter-chain interaction is thus greatly reduced, making these polymers nearly ideal one-dimensional systems.
