Abstract

Solid aluminum targets irradiated with intense (I0 approximately 1017 W/cm2) femtosecond optical pulses are shown to emit strong Kα lines in the keV spectral region. An analysis of the spectra, based on hydrodynamic simulations, indicates that the X-ray emission has a duration comparable to the incident optical pulse. Peak X-ray emission intensities are in the range 1.-5. 1012 W/cm2.
