Abstract

We investigate the transport properties of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a speckle random potential. At equilibrium in a trapping potential and for the considered small disorder, the condensate shows a Thomas-Fermi shape modified by the disorder. When the condensate is released from the trap, a strong suppression of the expansion is obtained as observed in recent experiments. For the parameters of the experiment, it is shown to result from the competition between the disorder, the interactions and the kinetic energy. A scenario for disorder-induced trapping is proposed and analyzed. Numerical calculations performed in the mean-field approximation agree with the analytical results derived on the basis of this scenario.
