Abstract
This study discusses theoretical and digital models for describing laser interaction with metals and dielectrics. Models are valid within a domain of moderate fluences and illuminations when compared with inertial confinement methods. They cover a broad thermodynamic domain of media ranging from solid state to plasma state of greater or lesser ionization, depending on the laser pulse duration, and prove useful for optimizing a Megajoule laser source. During prospective studies into laser-based lightning protection, significant results were obtained as regards simulation of non-linear propagation in air.
