Kinetics of plasma assisted ignition at elevated temperatures: Experiments and modelling

Abstract

Analysis of kinetics in the afterglow of pulsed nanosecond discharge for conditions of plasma assisted ignition at elevated temperatures has been performed. Computer modelling based on results of the experimental data on ignition delay times, allowed to study behavior of intermediate species responsible for combustion, during the ignition induction delay. Analysis of sensitivity of the ignition delay time to different deviations in initial task parameters, like absolute values of the electric field, density of radicals produced by the discharge, different possible ways of chemical reactions proved that the experimental data on ignition delay time can be explained by the model where high-voltage pulsed nanosecond discharge serves as a source of O, H, OH, and/or CnH2n+1 radicals. The results of the computer modelling demonstrate a special behavior of the kinetic curves of the main intermediate components in the process of plasma assisted ignition. Calculated kinetic curves for electrons, O, OH radicals, and main reagents and products have been analyzed. Different techniques for experimental observation of those kinetic curves have been considered. Preliminary experiments have been performed to measure temporal dynamics of electron density, OH radicals, and discharge/combution emission spectra for plasma assisted combustion.
