Abstract
The new project-management procedures now being used in firms deeply modify practices and the balance of power. A case study of an engineering center in a big French chemical plant raises several questions of major importance in the current context. What consequences does systematizing "concurrent engineering" have on the occupations involved in design? How to reinforce project procedures without hampering the technical professionalism that is a key resource in the race to innovate products? The objective is to characterize the various levels of changes intended to "articulate", in given occupations, breaking-edge "poles of qualification" and strong project teams. Concurrent project management modify both the framework for interventions by experts and elementary practices in design. These changes call into question evaluation procedures and the ways of promoting the activities and actors in engineering.
