Abstract

Magnetic properties of a series of self-organized arrays of Co nanospheres are reported. The samples are obtained by sequential sputtering of Al 2O3Co/Al2O3 on an Si substrate. A large anisotropy enhancement with decreasing size has been found following an inversely proportional dependence on the diameter. This anisotropy is shown to relate to the increase in the orbital moment caused by its incomplete quenching at the particle surface.
