Abstract
This article expands a methodological thought about the measurement of the impact of research articles in economics through their citations. Several indexes are constructed which take (or not) into account the age of the articles, the auto- citations, and the number of authors. The impact of each scholar is measured either in volume or per published article. Two periods of time are considered : 1969-1998 and 1994-1998. We produce descriptive statistics about the citations and their con- centration among the 1501 economists working in France (at least half time) that we referenced. Moreover, a new contribution consists in comparing the citation indexes to the indexes based on the number of publications. Finally, we provide rankings of economists (including French researchers working abroad) as well as rankings of the French research centers in economics.
