Abstract
Local pH change at n-GaAs cathodes was determined quantitatively by in situ infrared spectroscopy under conditions where diffusion of H(aq) + toward the surface is rate limiting. A shift of the near-surface pH from 2 to more than 12 was evidenced by a change of the dominant phosphate species from H3PO4 and H2PO4 - to HPO4 2- and PO4 3-.
