Abstract

In this paper we present a low profile, directive and very wideband antenna: a bowtie radiating element mounted above a high impedance surface (HIS). The HIS geometry consists of a periodic triangular unit cell printed on a dielectric slab. The resulting antenna is characterized by an overall thickness of 4.8mm, which corresponds to approximately λ/11 at the lowest operating frequency. It operates from 5.8GHz to 9GHz with a broadside gain varying from 3.9dB to 8.3dB.
