Abstract

The multi-Mev proton emission from thin foils irradiated with ultra-intense laser pulses was investigated. It was observed that protons were emitted, in a quasilaminar fashion, from a region of transverse size of the order of 100-200μm. An estimate of the size of the virtual source was provided by a computational code, which was developed to simulate the proton beam propagation. Results obtained by analyzing proton radiographs of periodically structured test objects and was corroborated by observations of proton emission from laser-heated thick targets.
