Phase control of directed diffusion in a symmetric optical lattice

Abstract

The phenomenon of directed diffusion in a symmetric periodic potential was demonstrated. The degree of temporal symmetry breaking of the system can be carefully controlled by varying the parameters of the phase modulation determining the force in the noninertial reference frame. It was demonstrated that the atoms can be set into directed motion by breaking the temporal symmetry of the system.
