Abstract
The eigenstates of external cavity semiconductor lasers containing a Faraday rotator were experimentally and theoretically investigated. The circular polarized eigenstates for such a laser have been shown to lead to polarization self-modulation. The intrinsic qualities of σ eigenstates together with the high spectral purity of their beat note make such lasers very promising candidates for the realization of optical clocks.
