Precursor activity in Gamma-Ray Bursts

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

The precursor activity in Gamma-Ray Bursts is discussed. Observations in X- and γ-rays are briefly summarized. Then theoretical possibilities to produce precursors are listed. It is shown that long delays between the precursor and the GRB are challenging for most models. For small delayed precursors, the specific case of the photospheric emission model is detailed. Results suggest that a non negligible fraction of the energy initially released by the central engine may not be thermal, but rather in magnetic form.
