Abstract

The 200TW laser system (Ti: Sapphire CPA system) at the Advanced Laser Light Source (ALLS) facility delivers 5J in 25fs pulse with a 10Hz repetition rate and a contrast ratio of 1:10-11 at the fundamental 800nm frequency. This system is used to develop new generation of X-ray and pulsed particle beam sources. We are exploring the use of such a high power laser as a basic component of a Laser Based Multifunction (LBM) system delivering simultaneously hard X-rays for high contrast imaging (Betatron emission) and accelerated protons (TNSA process) for tumor irradiation. In such a system, the laser beam is split in two beams. One beam is used to image with X-rays and in real time a tumor during its irradiation by protons accelerated by the second beam from the same laser. In the present work we experimentally studied the spatial properties of the plasmas produced by each beam to generate on one side the X-rays (interaction of a high intensity (>1019 W/cm 2) beam with a gas jet target (1cm long supersonic nozzle)) and on another side the protons (interaction of a high intensity (1020 W/cm2) beam with a thin foil (15nm)). We briefly discuss a new concept that could help to overcome the limitations of the TNS acceleration proton process.
