Abstract
A partial flooding of the Blayais nuclear power plant occurred in the Gironde estuary during the storm of 27/12/1999, without compromising the overall safety of the systems. The strength of the phenomena, and the key role of wind-waves, lead EDF to review the extreme hydraulic forcings that act on the plant, in order to enhance the protection of the plant against the flooding risk. Statistic and deterministic (modelling) evaluations of relevant hydraulic hazards (tide, storm surges, wind-waves), in addition to a physical modelling in a wave flume, enabled to design in a rapid and reliable way new protective structures (sea-wall). Studies were completed in october 2000, and main related works have been achieved in the field in march 2001.
