Abstract

AREVA NP has developed narrow gap welding techniques for joining ferritic low alloy steel heavy section components to austenitic stainless steel piping systems in pressurised water nuclear reactors. An appraisal of available measurement methods was carried out and two residual stress measurement techniques were used to obtain through-thickness residual stress distributions in a fully circumferential narrow gap welded. Firstly, the neutron diffraction (ND) measurement technique was used to obtain the hoop, radial and axial residual stress along the weld centerline and in the heat affected zone on the ferritic and stainless steel sides of the weld. The deep hole drilling (DHD) method was then used to obtain the residual stresses at the same locations. This paper describes the application of the DHD method and gives comparisons with both the ND measurements and numerical welding simulations. This paper also provides estimates of the full residual stress state present in the pipe based on the mapping procedure.
