Abstract
A penalized likelihood criterion is introduced for estimating the spectral envelope in the presence of measurement noise. A performance criterion is developed for assessing the goodness of fit of the envelope which is motivated by the statistical analysis of the model under consideration. This criterion is obtained as a large sample approximation of the likelihood for the estimated values |H(ω-k$/)|2. The envelope itself is estimated by numerical optimization of a penalized version of the criterion.
