Abstract

Yb: Y3Al5O3 (Yb: YAG) single crystal with Yb doping concentration 0.5 at.-% was grown by the Czochralski process. The absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra were studied and compared with 5 at.-% Yb: YAG single crystal. All results indicate that as a laser crystal, 0.5 at.-% Yb: YAG single crystal is suitable for pumping with 940 nm laser diode (LD) and the self-absorption effect is smaller than that of 5 at.-% Yb: YAG single crystal. The fluorescent lifetime of 0.5 at.-% Yb: YAG is 0.95 ms that is close to theoretical value. So this crystal is more promising as laser operation material used for high-efficiency, miniature type, compact solid-state lasers.
