Abstract
Magnetic circular X-ray dichroism on Co/Cu and Fe/Cu multilayers at the Cu K-edge show that the 4p-band of copper is significantly spin polarised by the adjacent Co or Fe layers. The spin polarisation of the copper layers depends strongly on the magnetic character of the adjacent magnetic layer and is induced by the hybridisation of the 4p band of copper with the 3d band of the magnetic metal. The magnetic polarisation is not restricted to the interface layer and departs from a simple 1/tCu dependence.
