Abstract
The stability of equilibrium states and the loading paths are investigated for problems involving a general class of elasto-viscoplastic models. It is found that the critical load separating the stable from the unstable equilibrium states depends on whether the force or the displacement at the boundary is controlled. For quasi-static loading paths the corresponding critical loads are insensitive to this control.
