Abstract

The modulational instability of streamers in electron temperature gradient turbulence was analyzed using the thermal Rossby (TR) wave model. An amplitude equation similar to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) was derived. It was shown that for certain parameter values one-dimensional collapse in the poloidal direction is possible in this system. Fixed points of the corresponding dynamical system were also obtained.
