Abstract
The synthesis of water-soluble polymers derived form cis-aconitic acid and polyethylene glycols (PEG) is described. Polymeric units that maintained a free carboxylic acid cis to an amide bond in the polymer mainchain degraded by a hydrolytic mechanism at pH 5.5 lysosome and 2.0 gut. In vitro biocompatibility assays indicated this polymer to be biocompatible. However, decarboxylation reactions during the synthesis were identified as the probable cause for the generation of nondegradable elements in the polymer mainchain.
