Thermodynamic re-assessment of Fe-Si and Fe-Si-C systems

Abstract

An investigation of the Fe-Si binary system and Fe-Si-C ternary system was carried out by experimental phase transformation temperature measurements and by the development of a thermodynamic database assessed according the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) method. Differential Thermal Analysis measurements were performed in order to obtain an accurate experimental description of Fe-Si and Fe-Si-C systems above 1200°C. Experimental trials were focused particularly on primary phase of - ferrite in order to get measurements as precise as possible of the liquidus, solidus and peritectic temperatures. All available experimental data were taken into consideration and a set of data was selected. By merging the selected literature results and the present experimental measurements, a new experimental description of the Fe-Si-C system was determined. By using the updated experimental description, a thermodynamic reassessment was performed to obtain a new set of interaction parameters for Gibbs energies of each phase. Compared with previously known thermodynamic descriptions, a better agreement was obtained in the present study for the description of solidus in the Fe-Si system and for the location of the monovariant lines in the Fe-Si-C system. Calculations using the presently developed thermodynamic description were discussed and compared with experimental data and previous assessments.
