Time as Imagined in the Evolutionary Epic

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

In the 19th century, theories of evolution lead to an upheaval in imaginary representations, especially in those concerning temporality. This change is not only one which stems from scientific theory and influences literature: it is rather a radical transformation of the cultural imagination which underlies all domains of culture. The study of evolutionist epics written in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century offers comprehension concerning the way in which new patterns of thought and of temporal representations appeared and which obstacles they encountered.
