Abstract

This work focuses on capacity estimation using an analytical formulation and a simulation based performance evaluation for the support of multiple services on the UMTS FDD WCDMA downlink. An initial capacity analysis and performance evaluation is conducted for a single service. The work moves on to assess system performance for mixed services. The objective is to understand the mutual interactions among services and the relationships between system performance and service characteristics. It is essential to grasp how system performance and service behavior are inter-related in mixed traffic configurations to design proper resource control. The analysis indicates that high data rate users can significantly degrade system performance if appropriate resource control is not adopted.
