Résumé

Today's application for optical communications shows a strong need for a low cost source operating at a repetition rate of a few GigaHertz in the 1.55 μm window. Besides demonstrating reduced chirp characteristics, such sources will respond to the market need only if they can be modulated with sufficient output power. High output power is requested for two reasons : first for reducing the number of optical fiber amplifiers, second, for supporting many WDM stages such as phasers or wavelength combiners which strongly affect the output power of each frequency channel. We report on low cost directly modulated monomode lasers that can be operated under GHz modulation rate with high peak power and high external efficiency. The source shows low 15° × 17° divergence thanks to a tapered section, an average efficiency of 0.39 W/A and excellent chirp characteristics. As a result, transmission penalty below 1.5 dB after 180 km transmission in standard fiber was achieved at a repetition rate of 2.5 Gbit/s with peak power over 20 mW.
