Résumé

We discuss simple experimental configurations related to hot dense matter physics and plasma soft X-ray lasers that can be studied with beams of the TESLA XFEL and the TESLA Test Facility (TTF2) at DESY/Hamburg. According to present planning, TTF2 will become operational in 2005 and will provide 100 fs pulses containing up to 1014 photons with energies in the range of 20 - 200 eV. When focussed to spots of 1 μm diameter, the pulses will reach intensities up to 1018 W/cm2 and generate thin layers of solid-density plasma with temperatures up to 1 keVand Gbar pressures. In addition to target heating, scattered photons will provide detailed information on the structure of the generated plasma. This offers new possibilities to study equations of state (EOS) and opacities over a wide range of the phase diagrams for various materials. During the 100 fs interaction time, the target material will be in an extreme state of non-equilibrium. Here we present theoretical investigations showing that the TTF2 pulses can be used as pumps to demonstrate He-α laser schemes for the first time, using helium gas as the target material.
