Design of an E-probe proximity fed triangular patch antenna

Résumé

Microstrip antennas are attractive for various applications: easy to fabricate and integrate, compact, well-known and controlled. Even so, they are inescapably narrow band, which remains a definite drawback for numerous systems emerging, for example in communication and sensor areas. Nowadays, the need of broadband antennas is constantly growing. That is why many solutions are studied to increase the microstrip antenna's bandwidth. Using a probe of a specific shape to feed the antenna is a particularly interesting solution. Previous studies have shown promising results, using an L-shaped or an F-shaped probe with a rectangular or triangular patch antenna mounted on a finite ground plane, using a low permittivity thick substrate [1, 2, 3, 4]. The maximum bandwidth obtained was 64 % (VSWR < 2). In this paper, we present a new design of an E-probe fed triangular patch antenna. Thus a parametric study has been achieved showing the influence on the impedance matching by varying the height of the patch and the height of one of the horizontal strips. The results allow to find an optimal design, which has been fabricated and compared to the simulated one.
