Résumé

In order to demonstrate the high-energy storage and the potential for high-energy extraction efficiency, a flat-flat cavity with an 18% output coupler was constructed around a 4.8-mm-long Yb:glass plate. The pump fluence incident on the Yb:glass was >300J/cm2 in a 100-μs pulse with no observed damage. With approximately 3.5 J stored by two-pass pumping, the Yb:glass, 1.5 J was extracted under free-running long-pulse conditions. However, efficient short-pulse amplification cannot occur with such a high gain in Yb:glass using current CPA techniques. The signal fluence can be reduced below damage threshold and can efficiently extract stored energy in a low-gain, low-loss regenerative amplifier (RA). Such a RA pumped by the 5-J Cr:LiSAF laser is currently being constructed.
